There are lots of reasons to quit smoking, but one of the main ones is how expensive smoking has become. If you don’t want to quit for health reasons, then perhaps you should consider quitting for the sake of your wallet.
You may have heard vaping costs less than smoking, and you might be skeptical about that. You need to buy something new – the vape kit – and you need to buy additional e-juice. These costs are bound to add up, right?
We’ll be taking a closer look and comparing the costs of smoking vs vaping and let you know which one will see you with more money when you’re done.
How Much do Smokers Spend on Cigarettes?
There’s no doubt that the amount of money you spend on cigarettes depends on the amount and brand of cigarettes you smoke. Smokefree NZ put together some statistics on smoking costs and found that smoking a packet each day means spending around $196 each week, or a total of $10,192 each year.
We can look at this another way by saying that those who earn an average wage of $25 an hour in New Zealand would be able to afford their daily pack by working for around 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The Costs of Vaping
Once again, vaping costs depend on the brand of e-cigarette and e-juice you use. There isn’t a whole lot of information available to quantify the cost of a packet of cigarettes in terms of vaping costs.

Vape Emporium in the UK and E-Cigarettes Reviewed in the US attempted to make a comparison by using different e-cig brands and different quantities of e-juice. Their calculations showed that one bottle of 60ml vape juice is worth around 10-15 cigarette packs.
If you vape as much as you smoke, you’re spending around $50-$75 each month on your e-juice, which works out at around $600-$900 each year. This is less than a tenth of how much you spend on cigarettes.
Of course you would have to buy the actual e-cig itself. We’ve got plenty of different e-cigs and starter kits for everyone on every budget. Even the high-end e-cigarettes we have cost under $150, and that’s a one-time cost. So vaping still comes out above smoking as far as cost goes.
So what sounds better; $900 or $9,200? Think about everything that the extra money could be spent on; you could go on holiday, save or your house, or just enjoy a bathtub filled up with chocolate. Vaping offers an unlimited number of possibilities.
We’ve got a wide range of e-cigs and e-juices that you can choose from allowing you to mix, match, and experiment until you get the perfect flavour to suit your tastes.
